Although we no longer offer classes specifically for artists below high school age that doesn't mean there are no resources for you to assist your young artist to grow.
As you've probably already discovered, many youth art programs are either difficult to find or are too costly to continue, or are basically a craft class with limited scope for those young artists who are genuinely looking to develop their abilities.
Below are the best ways we know of with the smallest cost of both time and money to be of greatest assistnace to to developing your young aritst. Private lessons and age appropriate group classes are a great way to foster your young aritsts. But don't believe that is the only way forward.

Art Museums
Chicago is famous for great art museums. These buildings are an Aladin's cave to a young artist. Many have youth programs that are free of charge. But just exposing your young artist to the greats of history and the variety of mediums will inspire them at their own level. And don't rule out attending appropriate gallery events. Teach your child how to adopt an 'evening' behavior and that this visit is for them and you will be welcome everywhere!!
Art Supplies
These don't have to be expensive and there are even places that give away materials or sell at a very low cost. You don't have to go to places like Blicks or amazon. But perhaps set up a list on Amazon that others can access when it's your young artists birthday or the holiday season. Save and cut boxes for canvases, and just about any clean refuse or discarded items that can be assembled or used for art making.

Home Studio Space
A very important element for your young artist is a dedicated space for them to make their art. This can be a corner in the kitchen or their room. But is has to be a safe area so they don't have to worry if something spills. Also, it will teach your child to take care of thier supplies and their space. Learning to care for your art materials is an important part of being an artist.

Art Exhibition
After your young artist has created a body of work it's time to put on an exhibition! This can be installed on the walls in your home, in the yard or at a coffee shop. Send out your invites, prepare refreshments and enjoy a great time with family, friends and fellow young artists!
